The Annals of African Surgery & Annals of Internal Medicine Discuss Collaboration

Prof. Saidi, Editor-in-Chief of The Annals of African Surgery (AAS), visited the Annals of Internal Medicine (Annals) in Philadelphia between 20th and 21st October, 2016. The purpose of the visit was to benchmark and learn from the publishing experience of the Annals, in existence since 1927.

This visit was facilitated by the African Journals Partnership Program (AJPP) that has paired AAS with Annals and the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences to enhance the quality and visibility of AAS. He was received by the Dr. Christine Laine, the host and Editor-in-Chief of Annals.

The first day was busy. He attended three meetings and acquainted with the editorial work flows at Annals. The statistical and manuscript conferences were particularly telling of the rigour with which manuscripts are processed. A meeting between the meetings with Dr. Laine explored policy matters, reviewer and author management, decision making levels, editorial board recruitment and roles and possible levels of collaboration with and support for AAS.

On the second day, meetings with the managing editor, the executive deputy editor, associate editors and the IT staff explored the manuscript handling system at Annals, Web of Science listing, deputy and associate editor roles, assigning manuscripts, journal metrics and website maintenance.

It was an excellent opportunity for The Annals of African Surgery in its endeavour to become a world class, premier African surgical journal. As a start, the two journals will work closely on the feedback received by AAS for a greater pitch for resubmission for PUBMED indexing.
