The Editorial Apprentice Program was inaugurated in 2022 and fully launched in 2024. This one-year program is designed to train and mentor the next generation of editors by providing junior surgeons with an in-depth, insider’s perspective on the journal. It prepares them to seamlessly step into editorial roles when the need arises to expand our editorial team.
Apprentices receive hands-on mentorship from our editors in all aspects of peer review. They actively learn and participate in the journal’s editorial workflow and serve as mentors to our interns through collaborative projects.
Calls for the Editorial Apprentice Program are made annually around mid-year. The Program is open to surgical trainees (residents and registrars in university and collegiate programs) and junior surgeons (within two years of qualification) based anywhere on the African continent. Candidates must have published a paper in a peer-reviewed journal however, those with a project about to be submitted are also considered.

DR. MERCY MITEI

Dr. Mercy Mitei is a general surgeon and faculty member at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. Her clinical interests include surgical oncology and hepatobiliary surgery, particularly multidisciplinary cancer care and complex gastrointestinal malignancies. Her academic work focuses on surgical education, oncology research, and global surgery, with an emphasis on advancing the quality of surgical care.

DR. CECILIA MUNGUTI

Dr. Cecilia Munguti is a General surgeon and a Lecturer in Mount Kenya University, Medical School. Her interests are in the field of gastrointestinal surgery (bariatric, upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery), basic sciences and clinical research.

DR. FRANCOIS ADRIEN BOKALLI

Dr. Francois Adrien Bokalli is a physician, pursuing Master of Medicine (General Surgery) at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is passionate about minimally invasive surgery, surgical oncology, clinical research and peer review. He is an advocate for evidence based medicine.
